PREVENTION OF HAND, FOOT, AND MOUTH DISEASE IN CHILDREN

1. Early signs of hand, foot, and mouth disease

– Fever: low-grade or high-grade fever. A persistent high fever that does not subside is a warning sign of severe illness.

 – Cutaneous Lesions: Erythematous maculopapular rash and vesicles appearing characteristically in the oropharynx, perioral area, palms, soles, buttocks, and knees.

– Some pediatric patients may experience oral discomfort, anorexia or feed refusal, vomiting, hypersalivation (excessive drooling), and diarrhea.

2. Warning signs of severe progression in hand, foot, and mouth disease

• The child exhibits a persistent high fever of 39°C that does not subside despite active antipyretic interventions.

• The child demonstrates sudden startle responses with reaching, agitation, and a blank, dazed stare.

• The child exhibits limb tremors (when handed toys to grasp), limb weakness, and an unsteady, staggering gait.

• The child exhibits abnormal eye movements, frequent vomiting, inconsolable crying, seizures, labored breathing...

3. Prevention of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease

 Currently, there is no vaccine available for hand, foot, and mouth disease; therefore, adherence to preventive measures is critically important:

• Wash hands with soap before meals and after using the restroom. Adults must also wash their hands thoroughly prior to caring for children.

• Regularly clean daily contact surfaces and objects—such as toys, learning supplies, table surfaces, chairs, and floors—using soap or standard cleaning agents.

• Consume thoroughly cooked food and boiled water; ensure eating utensils are washed thoroughly before use.

• Prevent children from coming into contact with individuals who are ill or suspected of having an infection.

• The condition is highly contagious; home isolation is required for 8 days from symptom onset, avoiding any contact with other children.

Parents need to proactively observe and monitor their children's health, especially during the peak season of hand, foot, and mouth disease from March to May and from September to November. If a child shows any suspected symptoms, take them to see a pediatrician for proper diagnosis and treatment guidance.
